About
Originally from Manchester (UK), Chuck’s early years were also spent in the Eastern Townships in Quebec, and Vancouver Island, before settling in Atlantic Canada.
Chuck spent the first half of his career defending claims for large companies, insurance companies, banks and hospitals as a Partner at a large regional law firm. He reached a crossroad in his career when he turned 40. He had spent his entire adult life advocating for people who needed help, while his professional life was consumed by representing institutions who defended claims brought by those same people. He decided to dedicate the rest of his career to helping people, instead of institutions.
Chuck’s practice is focused on plaintiff-side tort/accident claims, disputes involving long-term disability benefits, life insurance benefits, property insurance disputes, sexual assault/abuse claims, institutional abuse claims, mass tort, class action litigation, and professional negligence claims.
100% of Chuck’s work comes from referrals in the legal, insurance and business communities, and from his former clients. He has collaborated with lawyers from other firms throughout his career, and he continues to do so.
Chuck brings a unique perspective to plaintiff-side claims given that he often acted for the opposing party/insurer in a former life.
He is a well-respected litigator who believes that the best way to obtain fair outcomes is to prepare as though every case is going to trial. He is rated by Best Lawyers in Canada (Insurance since 2012, Personal Injury since 2014). He has been recognized by the Canadian Lexpert Directory as a leading practitioner in Personal Injury Litigation (Represents Plaintiffs) since 2015. Chuck was recognized by Benchmark Canada as a New Litigation Star by Benchmark Canada (2015 Ed.).
Chuck is passionate about supporting his community and using his knowledge to help people. Chuck has been an advocate on several access to justice initiatives, he is a fierce advocate for people with physical and mental disabilities.
Community matters to Chuck. He is the past Chair of the Atlantic MS Society of Canada, and past Chair of the National Board of Directors. He’s a former board member and Chair of the Board of Governors at the Sacred Heart School of Halifax. Chuck is the immediate past President of the Bedford Beavers Swim Team.
One of the great joys of Chuck’s career was teaching Civil Trial Practice at Dalhousie’s Schulich School of Law for four years (2006-08; 2009-2011). Chuck also taught the second-year moot workshops from 2021-2023. He has also been a frequent lecturer at the Schulich School of Law.
